I posted a portion of this on YA, I didn't include it all due to space limitations, so I figured I'd put it here. As some are aware, I am diabetic and will someday be blind, should I live that long. I already use a screen magnifier program and listen to audio books when I can. I can still read with my glasses, but it causes pain, so I do my reading with the magnifier. I wrote this a while back, and I hope you will understand why the darkness is an ally, a friend of sorts, and even an enemy.
Darkness Is My Ally
The darkness is my greatest friend,
An ally tried and true.
It holds me tight and won't let go,
No matter what I do.
It lets me hear the world around,
And yes, I still can feel.
Though darkness is an awesome force,
My life it cannot steal.
We are conjoined, and cannot part,
The darkness and my strife.
It may consume my very sight,
But will not take my life.
For when I'm gone the darkness dies,
I'll dwell in heaven's light.
It's then I'm sure that I will see,
My ally's final flight.
For now we two are making friends,
We are two of a kind.
We'll be together on this earth,
As long as breath I find.
For in the course of living large,
I've seen and done a lot.
Diabetic though I have become.
I've not yet bought a plot.
My eyes will someday fail to see,
They'll gather no bright light.
But in the darkness, I'll still look,
And find that I have sight.
That sight will be the memories,
The one's I hold within.
Some are next to Godliness,
And some are mortal sin.
The friends I've made throughout my life,
I count as being blessed.
Even if I cannot see,
To tell if I'm well-dressed.
When all is said and all is done,
The farewells done this time.
Just put me in a box of pine,
A read to me a rhyme.
And I finish with this question. Who is truly blind, he that has no sight, or he who refuses to see?
