Hi David

This discussion should be on audacity-devel as other will have things
to say I'm sure, so I'm posting it there.  Apologies for the slight
editing for clarity.

No problem.

My thoughts too, which is why I left them in but disabled them when
they are not needed (and changed the label from 'measure' to 'measured').

I think using the word 'dialogue'  is a bit 'geeky', I think 'tool' is
more user friendly.

I don't think (1) and (2) say much more than we have already, but does
specialise the tool to speech - it may get used for other things as
well as WCAG stuff.

People can see this directly above the 'Information' section, so do we
really need to say it?

This must be fairly obvious to most people?  Boxes to type things in
and a button to press labeled 'Measure'?  Again I'd ask if we really
need this note.

What I don't want to do is extend this box to a long list of
instructions.  The link to the web site should be sufficient, or add
another link to instructions on our wiki.  There is also quite a lot
of text here already, compared to most other dialogs in Audacity.  We
are striving for design that doesn't need instructions, I think, and
also minimizing text that screen readers repeat endlessly.  And make
things work on smaller screens, like the Eee.

What does anybody else think?

Just a small point. Using ctrl + alt + alphanumeric key can be a
problem for other languages. See the section Choosing shortcut keys
(what not to do) in:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb545460.aspx#guidelines

For example, hungarian keyboard:

having thought a little more, I guess it's only a potential problem if
the dialog contains text boxes, so that if one of them is the focus,
then there's an ambiguity as to what the user means by ctrl + alt +
alphanumeric.

David.

Although we sometimes use ALT in shortcuts, shouldn't we avoid them
anyway, because they won't work on Mac? From:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Option_key

"(ALT) is not used to access menus or hotkeys, but is instead used as a
modifier for other command codes, and also to provide easier access to
various accents and symbols."
