Marco,
I was excited to see the new map composer grid feature. I tried it out on some field maps last week and found out that the grids were not accurate. I believe you might be able to reproduce an error with the attached test file. It appears to be a dpi issue, for some reason. Here are my steps: 1) Open a new qgis canvas and add the attached shapefile. 2) Verify that the projection (CRS) is set to epsg 26911 for the project. 3) Zoom in to a subset of the grid at approximately 1:100000 scale. 4) Open the map composer and add the map canvas to the composer canvas. 5) Turn on the composer grid with a 5000x5000 spacing. 6) Now, zoom in the map composer 4 or 5 times. 7) With the map layer selected, update the preview and note the offset between the two grids. 8) Output a png image at 300 dpi (should look correct). 9) Output a png image at 200 dpi (the offset should show). On another note, it would be nice to be able to suppress the scientific notation of the grid labels. In the UTM example I have, the scientific notation is actually a larger label than the full integer value. Hi John
Thank you for reporting. I'm currently implementing the possibility to rotate the composer map and this changes a lot in the composer grid code. Therefore, I'm going to address this issue after the rotation code is in trunk. Regards, Marco Am Montag, 19. Oktober 2009 22.44:56 schrieb John C. Hi John
Do you still have the issue with the shift between composer map contents and the composer grid with current svn? I did some prints with the nv_grid shape this morning (to png, 200 dpi) and it seemed to be ok. Regards, Marco Am Dienstag, 20. Oktober 2009 19.27:53 schrieb John C. Hi Marco,
Excellent work with the grid composer. Things lined up in a new test I ran, so it appears you have handled the offset issue. For some reason, my old project now crashes if I try to open in qgis. I suspect this might be from changes in the composer structure for qgs files, but not certain. The control over precision and the option for labels following boundary direction are brilliant! Great work, as usual. New issues from the other changes I have seen so far: 1) If there is no composer, the "Map Composer" menu item is empty. Perhaps this should be a submenu under "File" rather than it's own menu? 2) If I try to close my composer window, I am confronted with a dialog that says, "Do you really want to remove the composer instance, 'name'?" Canceling will keep the composer, but you have the window occupying desktop space. If you say ok, the composer is gone for good. My expectation would be to close the window, receive no dialog, but have that composer available under the "Map Composer" menu item. Perhaps this is a work in progress. Also see https://trac.osgeo.org/qgis/ticket/2042 Cheers, John On Oct 29, 2009, at 6:57 AM, Marco Hugentobler wrote: > Hi John > > Do you still have the issue with the shift between composer map > contents and > the composer grid with current svn? > I did some prints with the nv_grid shape this morning (to png, 200 > dpi) and > it seemed to be ok. > > Regards, > Marco > > Am Dienstag, 20. Hi John
Good to hear that the offset issue seems to be fixed now. > For some reason, my old project now crashes if I try to open in qgis. > I suspect this might be from changes in the composer structure for qgs > files, but not certain. Yes, the behaviour is different now because it is possible to have multiple composers in a project. The composers are deleted on window close (similar to most apps that are deleted on main window close). Otherwise the user cannot get rid of composer instances. You could minimize the window to have more screen space. An option would be to have the close button and menu entry back that minimises (or even hides?) the composer window. There was some conversation about trying not to get too many main menu items. To me, having it under File would seem fairly logical as Print functions are also there. > >> 2) If I try to close my composer window, I am confronted with a >> dialog >> that says, "Do you really want to remove the composer instance, >> 'name'?" I suppose this will necessitate the use of template saving. I had been content to simply have a composer "project" stored in the qgs file, but will have to rethink my workflow. This is not an issue, just a matter of fact. The crashing issue may be specific to that project, perhaps a symbology issue. I was able to open several other project files without crashing, but a new and more serious issue has arisen. Now, opening the a project brings a map composer window to the screen as well as the canvas. This composer window cannot be minimized or closed. Worse, it causes Mac OS X Finder, Dock, and Spaces to all cease functioning. Essentially, it paralyzes the OS X gui. Quitting qgis does not fix this. The only solution I have found is to logout and log back in to restore gui functionality. I should add that I am using qt-4.6-beta, so it would be great if another Mac user with a more conservative qt environment could test this and see if it happens for them. The key is having an existing qgis project. Beyond that, I do not have much information to provide that may help uncover this. We can try to work on this off-list if you would like. William,I was wondering if you have seen the problem with the new composer breaking some core OS X functionality? If I open an existing project (possibly true with new projects as well), the dock is killed, command-tab to switch between applications does not function, expose and spaces are non-functional, and I have to logout to cure my ails. Have you built and tested the new composer at all? I'm trying to see if this might be narrowed down to my use of the qt-4.6-cocoa beta or if it is something internal to the new composer changes irrespective of the qt version. If you could test the current trunk, that would be useful. I just built the xcode project, and the same problem exists as with the cmake build. Thanks, John Begin forwarded message:

William,You can disregard. I reverted to qt-4.5.3-carbon and the issue does appear to be tied to qt-4.6. I have not tried 4.6-carbon to see if it is a cocoa-specific issue yet. John On Nov 4, 2009, at 12:15 PM, John C. Tull wrote:

Marco,Based on my current testing, it seems that the behavior of auto-hiding/minimizing of existing composer windows in opened project files is leading to the gui issues in Qt-4.6-cocoa and OS X. Would it be possible to simlpy not auto-hide that window when a project file is opened? Perhaps even an OS or qt version test (QT_MAC_USE_COCOA?) could cause this to be skipped. I'm hoping that the tabbed interface idea that Tim mentioned will come about. That may be the cure-all that can overcome some of the general awkwardness of the current setup. Hi John
r12088 does not do the minimizing on mac. My recent commit brings back the old behaviour of only closing composer instances instead of deleting them. To really delete (and also rename) them, there is a dialog called 'composer manager'. A tabbed interface will surely be good. At the hackfest in Vienna, we decided to wait with the tabs until after the 1.4 release because adding tabs will alter qgisapp.cpp/h heavily. Like that, 1.4 can be released sooner. Hi Marco,
This implementation works flawlessly as far as I can tell. I think this approach, and the use of a dialog when opening composer, is very useful. Perhaps this should be the default approach on all OS's. Also, not deleting them is much more intuitive from my perspective. The wait on tabs makes sense.
