I found an old Compass Coin Magnum. The battery
compartment has 3 double terminal connectors that
accept 9v batteries. But, I'm told that detector
actually uses 3 special AA battery packs that
plug into those connectors and if 9v batteries
are connected it will burn out the circuit boards.

I did install 3 9v batteries and the detector
seemed to work fine and I didn't smell anything
burning. :)

Is there any truth to what I was told about 9v
batteries damaging the Compass?

Thanks

Nope, not true it will not damage the machine I know I have done the same thing.  You are just underpowering with the 3 - 9 volts.
Go to Radio Shack and look for a battery pack that will hold 4 AA batteries and have the positive and negative on the top of the pack that will connect to the terminal leads on you machine.
You will need a total of 3 of these battery packs.
It should take a total of 12 AA batteries to properly power up the machine.

Thanks!

But, I was wondering -- 4 AA batteries = 6 volts.  So, connecting a 9v where
there should be 6 volts is overdoing it, isn't it?

Should be 12 Volt to run the machine and 6 volts to run the meter.
