We can't answer for Digidesign, but did you give the client a standard
44100 Hz 16 bit PCM WAV? That is the sample rate and format of the
WAV files Audacity exports by default. Audio players will often say
"codec error" or similar if they cannot understand a file. A codec is
the software that does decoding (playing) or encoding (writing) of
the audio. Often the error may simply mean that although the format
(such as WAV) is supported, the player cannot cope with the particular
sample rate or format of the file.

You could consider compiling Audacity Beta from source code with ASIO
support (though this must be for your own personal use only, not for
distribution):
