I just had a funny thought:

At what point does a set of clichés become a new sub-genre?

Really, that's what it seems like clichés are building up to being—well, the broader kind, at least.

Now that is something to ponder, I've never considered cliches as being a sub-genre before. Because there are cliches in all genres and they now hold such a big interest in the public eye, I mean look at all the Scary Movie-esq films out there and they are eating up the box office, there is already a cult following for most of them. Fantasies started that way too, with small cores of die hard fans, then the "yea I'm a fan" fans, then the 'if no one's around' fan, of course that led to the "if it's on I won't change it" fan, then you got the announcement that it was gonna be a Blockbuster summer hit and wham everybody claims to be a die hard until the hype dies down.
My point I think cliches are already a sub-genre they have a big enough break away, and crossover following that they might even get exalted to a genre all there own one day. D.
