How about you list your classes Morgan? As for me, it should be a busy fall term: CART 351, Networks and navigation CART 261, Maya I, or "Digital Dimensions I" which is a shitty title EAMT 203, Digital Audio Editing, I wonder how that one will differ from CART 356a CART 355c, Digital Text Typography (not registered yet) CART 360 || 363, haven't decided yet, can anyone offer advice? -mt On Aug 16, 12:42 am, "Morgan Sutherland" <[hidden email]> wrote: > Hello everybody, > > I'm curious as to what classes people are taking... > > ...list 'em! > > -- > Morgan Sutherland --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ http://groups.google.com/group/cart-discuss -~----------~----~----~----~------~----~------~--~--- |

matt, you nut man! busy in the best case ! ;) weren't you switching to more math stuff? as for me, im gonna work during this semester, so it's a light one + I want to finish my CS courses with good grades before continuing CART, COMP 352 - data structures (wanted to take 351, but doesn't make sens since I need good databases knowledge for it to be interesting...!? wonder how anyone else approaches this course... also wanted to take 355c, but at the same time as 352... :( ) COMP 335 - theoritical CS and maybe a john molson class to get an idea of what is going on over there I just took comp 229 - System software - way too intense in 6 weeks! encs 282 - Technical comm - ridiculous how about you morgan? Anyone else share the idea that it doesn't make sens to take CART courses without having finished the COMP part in the CART Major? Hey c-a, I will probably drop 1 class before the deadline, it's what I usually do. Register for 5, evaluate the work load in the first two weeks, and then drop it down a notch. I'm also going to be working this semester (freelance web design) so 4 courses sounds about right. I agree that doing a majority of CART classes without the technical background that COMP offers is disadvantageous, seeing as how people will spend 80% of their effort on trying to get their project off the ground (website, video, programming, whatever it may be) in the first set of CART classes. 335 and 352 are both interesting classes. I imagine you've taken 248 and 249, i.e. java 1 and 2? As for me... I have so many credits at this school I'm trying to re- shuffle (yet again) my degree. I was thinking about a double major (BFA, BSC) but I have to find out if Concordia will allow it (I know Angela from 255 was in a similar situation, but she never got back to me on that). Chances are good, though, that I'll just stick with the CART Major. -mt On Aug 17, 10:43 am, c-a <[hidden email]> wrote: > matt, you nut man! busy in the best case ! ;) > > weren't you switching to more math stuff? > > as for me, im gonna work during this semester, so it's a light one + I > want to finish my CS courses with good grades before continuing CART, > > COMP 352 - data structures (wanted to take 351, but doesn't make sens > since I need good databases knowledge for it to be interesting...!? > wonder how anyone else approaches this course... also wanted to take > 355c, but at the same time as 352... :( ) > COMP 335 - theoritical CS > > and maybe a john molson class to get an idea of what is going on over > there > > I just took > comp 229 - System software - way too intense in 6 weeks! > encs 282 - Technical comm - ridiculous > > how about you morgan? I'm taking: COMP228 - System Hardware COMP238 - Math for CS I (may drop one of the COMP classes as I'll have the discussion group + DATA + Sense Lab + a lot of TML work on the side) CART356A - Abstract Soundscapes w/ Salter and either: PHIL318 - Biopolitics or CART6?? - Architecture of Responsive Environments w/ Xin Wei + DATA Discussion Group maybe for credit, maybe not. @c-a, so far I've been trying to take as many classes that directly related to the stuff we're doing at the TML so that I can get the most out of that while I'm here. That means: high-level programming + post-modern philosophy ;) I'm chatting with Charles right now about the difficulty of focusing on engineering and art at the same time. Have you guys compared taking CART and COMP courses at the same time vs. taking all COMP/MATH certain semesters and all CART in others? "CART 360 || 363, haven't decided yet, can anyone offer advice?" I can recommend 363 with Valerie Walker. It's a very open-ended class, but Valerie _actually knows how to program_, so you can learn a lot if you push hard. Some of the projects that people made in the class last semester were ridiculous. Didier for instance didn't know a drop of JAVA coming in and his final project was essentially a generative version of Microsoft Paint! I was lame and mostly adapted Max stuff I was doing outside of school. I also wrote some externals for Max in JAVA. I would have gotten a lot more out of the class if I'd taken it in later. Hey, I don't want to rain on ur parade to take 352,, but have you ever looked at data structures + algorithms = programming? Pretty much the scariest book i've ever seen, by donald knuth, and I think it's the textbook. Hah, there's no way they would teach with Knuth! I'm pretty sure they use this: http://ww0.java4.datastructures.net/ Though the consensus seems to be that this is 'the one': http://www.amazon.com/Introduction-Algorithms-Thomas-H-Cormen/dp/0262032937 Typical Concordia. Look what I Googled to find it: http://www.google.ca/search?num=100&hl=en&q=algorithms+amazon&btnG=Search&meta= First result. Nice! ;) well.. I've done every other comp courses up to those courses, so if I wanna go forward, it's the next one to do... I'm more concerned about 335 though.. anyways, I'm gonna see... but I like the title of the book :) On Aug 17, 4:36 pm, "Daniel Roberts" <[hidden email]> wrote: > Hey, > > I don't want to rain on ur parade to take 352,, but have you ever > looked at data structures + algorithms = programming? Matt, don't they just check if you have the credits and then make you pay and then give you the diploma? "Give me" the diploma? Ha! I wish. I did get a mail last semester stating that I was eligible for graduation. I'll try to sit down with an advisor. Don't worry about 335, it's a fun class, deals with languages and grammars and Turing machines, with vague philosophical implications (though it's up to you to spot them). The math is simple and enjoyable. ca - oh, i guess they don't use that book, oops... if your are interested, you should check it out, but its basically advanced mathematics and search algorithms for handling data and navigating advanced data structures like trees and the like. -dan On Aug 18, 6:29 am, c-a <[hidden email]> wrote: > Nice! ;) well.. I am talking to Xin Wei right now It is being taught as CART 451 now in the undergraduate level and and 6 for the graduate level. If you have taken 451 before and don't wanna sign up for a 6 level course then you can maybe do an Independent study with Xin Wei and sit in the class. here are the links: Architecture of Responsive Spaces Undergrad CART 451 Grad (eg SPEC 600 level)

Turns out I can't take 400 level classes until I finish my 200-level CS courses (because I'm now in the B.Comp.Sci track as opposed to the BFA). So, the new list is: COMP228 - "Systems Hardware" COMP238 - "Math for CS I" CART356A - "Realtime Audio" LBCL295 - "History of Art" On Sun, Aug 17, 2008 at 3:01 PM, Morgan Sutherland <[hidden email]> wrote: > I'm taking: > > COMP228 - System Hardware > COMP238 - Math for CS I > (may drop one of the COMP classes as I'll have the discussion group + > DATA + Sense Lab + a lot of TML work on the side) > > CART356A - Abstract Soundscapes w/ Salter > > and either: > PHIL318 - Biopolitics > or > CART6?? - Architecture of Responsive Environments w/ Xin Wei > > + > > DATA Discussion Group maybe for credit, maybe not. > > @c-a, so far I've been trying to take as many classes that directly > related to the stuff we're doing at the TML so that I can get the most > out of that while I'm here.
