In CITY OF MEN, two best friends (played by Douglas Silva and Darlan Cunha) are divided by a conflict between rival gangs just as they are about to reach their 18th birthdays. Two young mates living in Brazil's notorious favelas discover things about their missing fathers' pasts which will shatter their solid friendship.
This film version of the TV show inspired by 2002’s City Of God has little in common with Fernando Meirelles’ blistering masterpiece. Eschewing the original’s rat-a-tat style and manic energy, this is a slower, more emotional riff on themes of friendship and fatherhood. Silva (God’s Li’l Zé) and Cunha play the boys in the hood trying to become men - Silva trying to raise his son; Cunha trying to reconnect with his jailbird father - as gang wars rage around them. If it occasionally feels like a clunky, obvious TV movie remake of the riveting original, the likable performances, hot, sweaty atmosphere and decently mounted action scenes make this entertaining favela fare.
