If we do include the issue tracker in the main menu maybe it would be a
good idea to include introductory text and a link to the support forum.
Something like:
The issue tracker is used to help developers keep track of problems in
MuseScore that need fixing. If you are not used to writing bug reports
or are uncomfortable with English please use the support forum instead.
To increase the chances that a bug gets fixed please make your report
simple to understand and easy to reproduce (see "How to report bug or
ask for support" for details).
Many users are not used to seeing issue/bug trackers. Maybe the
introductory text would be helpful even if we don't add the tracker to
the main menu.
MuseScore is the only large software project I've become very involved
in so I am open to new ideas. In the past I have tried to limit the
number of issues in the tracker to keep it more manageable and roughly
reflect the direction of development as Lasconic mentioned. Maybe this
is less realist as MuseScore grows. In the last couple months it seems
like the number of bug reports has increased dramatically (due to wider
participation).
One thing I've noticed about the bug tracker is it is sometimes
difficult to close issues once they are added. For example feature
requests usually contain good suggestions but tend to clutter up the
issue tracker unless it is clear that a developer intends to work on it.
At the moment feature requests are pretty rare in the tracker because
most people use the forums, but I worry that it could become
unreasonable if it is featured prominently. Also I would recommend
removing "Support requests" from the issue tracker since the forum is
simpler to use for newcomers and probably gets a wider readership.
