See if you can right-click on a text entry field and get a context
menu that allows you to select your input method. Then simply select
SCIM from that menu.
This will work in most GTK+ 2 applications, as long as you have the GTK
immodule package installed, and in some Qt applications, when you have
the Qt immodule package installed.
If you need to use SCIM in other programs (but please say you don't),
you'll have to mess about with so-called environment variables, which
allow SCIM to be used with the XIM (X Input Method) protocol. I have a
guide up at
http://folk.uio.no/davidjo/i18n.php#scim that tries to make
some sense of it, but it's hopelessly out of date, so I don't know if
the settings I've documented are still correct today.
Best of luck!
