My office is short on clerks on Mondays. It sure would be nice to go in and help them on Mondays. I am an RCA getting only one day a week right now. I asked  My postmaster about this and he said the clerks would probably file a grievance against him, he also said : he used to use TRC's to do clerk work and a clerk filed a grievance against him. The outcome was..... My postmaster was made to promise he would never use TRC's to do clerk craft work again. Is there anyone reading this that would know of some exception where an RCA can be used to perform clerk work? I would like some documentation on this.
There is nothing so powerful as truth, and often nothing so strange.

Don't have any documentation, but my offices doesnt even have clerks. All the morning sorting is done by RCA's. If you happen to be doing a route that day as well, you just switch over to your route at like 7:30.

You can have a dual assignment as an RCA/Casual if I'm not mistaken... but you are only allowed to work as a casual 90 days per yr.

The answer is yes. I am living proof being a dual appointment RCA/casual clerk. First, the post office for your installation would need you according to some arcane method/formula they use to deciper whether they would need you. Then they usually ask the most senior RCA in their office and go down the list until someone accepts. Then you are appointed for an 89 day term. If they still need you after the 1st appointment, they can reappoint you after a 6 or 7 day layoff. You can be reappointed continually until the need for you is no longer there. I've been doing it for a few years like this and I never know when my time will finally be up. You may also have clerks filing grievances against you. I did at first but I've busted my butt for them and now they almost accept me as their own. You will be doing the crappiest jobs in the office and you'll only make 9$/hr. When I first started, I was making $10/hr., worked my way up to $11/hr. and this year the post office decided to cut all casual pay to 9$/hr. Make no mistake, it is a rough way to live, the hours suck and you WILL WORK HARD!

I am an rca currently on a vacant route. I was tricked into signing paper work to be a casual.
I dont mind the hours, but, I do mind the lazy people I work with. I get taken advantage by the clerks, when I work on their side. They take their time so I can do all the work. In my office there's not much work left for a 3rd hand but they whine and complaint of their health "I cant do this by myself I need help" with three persons in the office I sort flats case them, case all of the po box mail. If they can't do the their job, they need to just retire and give someone else a change to actually work and do their job.

A Postmaster in West Ky is using RCAs to carry city routes. He told them they will receive their regular rate of pay($18.00) as he is putting their time in as Aux help on a Rural Route. As instructed by Tacs. And he will later transfer those hours over to City Routes.
Also using a RCA on a City Route on Sat. When a near by office requested to borrow this RCA for a Rural Route.

RCA's do clerk work regularly in our office in morning and afternoon, grievences are filed but i don't know the outcomes...several running city routes, same grievences( union on management side)....last Saturday a PTF ( on over-time list) sat home while an RCA carried his route....long story short, they called him at 2 in the afternoon to come in and help RCA's still out....guess what his answer was....204-b and RCA's were there till 9:00..

I once asked the union steward about being apponted as a casual and she said we are allowed to serve two terms of 90 days after the time is up, is  voluntarily. If you are asked to sign again you can refuse.
