Oil shale, tar sands a bust for wild western landscapes?
What will oil shale and tar sands development mean for the cherished
western landscapes in Colorado, Utah and Wyoming? Could it mean some
of the Colorado Plateau?s most remote and beautiful corners will be
industrialized beyond recognition? Will it look like northern Alberta
where tar sands development has destroyed huge swaths of Canada?s
boreal forest contributing to both global warming and air and water
pollution?
An upcoming presentation will allow the public to take a closer look
at what oil shale and tar sands development could mean for Colorado,
Utah and Wyoming, where the federal government may lease 1.9 million
acres of public land for oil shale and tar sands development even
though the production technology isn?t proven and the impacts aren?t
yet known.
The Oil Shale and Tar Sands Road Show is a two-state, five-city tour.
Join us for the Oil Shale and Tar Sands Road Show in your area at 6:00
p.m. on Tuesday, September 30th at the Grand County Library Utah in
Moab. Award-winning conservation photographer Garth Lenz and energy
analyst Randy Udall will provide powerful images and stories of
Canada?s devastating tar sands boom. Lenz will show photographic
evidence of a brand of energy development that has dramatically and
permanently polluted and transformed some of Canada?s wildest lands.
Udall will report on how the federal government?s proposal to lease
public land for oil shale and tar sands production could bring similar
devastation to Utah, Colorado and Wyoming landscapes. Both speakers
will illuminate the potential social and environmental impacts that
commercial oil shale and tar sands development may have on our Western
lands.
