Are we REQUIRED to case DPS first?

We were just told today that we are going to
start earlier and case letters first. We have
a TON of flats. Can they make us do that?
So your telling me for every flat I have to
Pull out all the letters and case to save a few
fuc@KN letters that are 1st class and can go
out tomorrow????? They sent a sub out to
deliver like 19 first class letters today that were
miss thrown. I don't get it.............

p.s most of our routes are 70 to 100 miles in
length so we don't take out our dps seperate.
Why do the complicate simple things???

You can solve that issue real easy, quit casing DPS.

Many districts are trying to implement casing letters first.

Just because you have a high mileage route does not mean you have to case your route.  Route I serve on is 80 miles and I do not case DPS.

There are several class action grievances working their way up the chain.  I think the USPS is gonna lose this one, but in the meantime you have to do what they say.

From the PO-603:

223.1

In all three casing systems, you may case delivery point
sequenced mail, at your option, in accordance with 15, Schedules.

I would welcome the earlier start time, just as a personal preference.  However I would like to offer this tip on casing letters first.  Leave them sticking out just a little so you can slide the flats behind them.  For the record, I've been taking dps to the street for 13 years on a 31 mi 550 box (no nbu) route.  Wouldn't have it any other way.  Good luck

And now the rest of the story:

From PO-603

223.23 Flats and Odd-Size Pieces
Case flat mail and odd-size pieces that fit in the same separation as letter
mail. Generally, case these items after letter-size mail. If management
approves, such items may be cased before letter-size mail if this does not
delay the redistribution of missorted preferential mail or hinder the efficient
casing of letter mail.

It clearly states to case flats after letters UNLESS management approves differently.

Not saying I agree but the case is there for letters to be cased first.

If i didnt case all my mail, and just took the dps to the street i would have about 2 to 3 hours just standing around. in our office start time is 8am, at the earliest we leave at 10:30 most times its after 11. we are required to wait for xpress also. so if i took dps to the street my start time would be about 10am, and i dont think the geniuses at the po would wait around till 7 for me to get back lol.

Becky,
Your probably have a right hand drive vehicle. I don't .
There is no way I can take flats and dps out together,
fumbling around. Its a safety issue for me.

I took DPS to the street for years in a left-hand drive vehicle, as did 7 other carriers in my office.  It can be done and done safely.  Most just want to make excuses as to why they will not do it.

Well today was our first day coming in early and casing letters first.
I had 5 tubs of flats and 3 trays of DPS and it was
a real DRAG!!! How someone could think this up is beyond me.
Also I only had 2 letters out of sequence. What are they
thinking having subs go out and deliver 8 letters. We had
such a good morale going in our office and little by little
its changing. I GUESS I'll get use to it, but I hope they
do grieve this SOON! Glad to have a job.......
really I am! I have to get rid of this anger. So thanks
for letting me vent guys!!!  jan

They can't make you case the DPS, but if you are going to then I suppose they can make you do it first.  But what happens if you say you are gonna take it to the street, and then after you case the flats you change your mind and decide to case it?

Wave,

I think maybe you are missing the point, MOST carriers want to case DPS, just not first like they are being told to do.

"...MOST carriers want to case DPS, just not first like they are being told to do."

That would be quite interesting to see in our office, considering we don't get the DPS until 9:30 - 10:00 most days and often get it AFTER 11:00.

No, I get it.  I'm just wondering what they would say if you told them every day that you were gonna take it to the street instead of casing, and then changed your mind after your flats were all up.  What could they do.  We have the right to case DPS as long as we can do it within the time frame, if they told you you couldn't case it then I would think you would have a grievance then.

Wave, what's really funny is in our office, we ALL used to case the letters first, but MANAGEMENT forced us to do the flats first, and we found out we liked it that way. Now they're going to order us to switch back?? I think NOT!

I'd be willing to bet that this has to do with their precious EXFC scores.
