ArcSDE string/nstring types

Some javascript/style in this post has been disabled (why?)

Does anybody know the maximum length of a string/nstring coming out of arcsde?  Currently, the provider is allocating the conversion on the stack, which if they’re too big, would lead to access violation exceptions…
