Hello everyone! I’m a new informatics fellow at
Regenstrief working under Paul and Burke on OpenMRS. There seems to be some
interest around using cellular phones, SMS messages, and so on to get
information from OpenMRS and to send information into OpenMRS. I’m
considering a module that would allow you to use OpenMRS to send messages to
users (one example: “Will you attend your appointment tomorrow? Send ‘1’
for Yes, ‘2’ for No.”) and collects responses. Such systems could
be as simple as a one way message without any confirmation to a complex menu
system such as the one Google uses in the US (see http://www.google.com/mobile/products/sms.html#p=default).
I wanted to ask some questions of everyone so that we can
plan for as many scenarios as we can.
1) Are you currently using a system to communicate with remote
users (patients, healthcare workers, etc)? This can be SMS messaging (such as
implemented in Frontline:SMS, RapidSMS, PicoRosa), telephone calls, community
outreach programs with interpersonal contacts, or anything else. If so, what (if
any) technologies are you using? What use cases are you supporting? Could you
benefit from increased interaction with OpenMRS?
2) If you’re not using any such system, are you
considering one? What uses do you envision requiring? Are you considering any
particular technologies?
Please let me know if I can provide any information or
answer questions. Based on what I get back we’ll start looking at how
best to implement this, but I’m not certain on a timeframe. If anyone has
specific needs, please do let me know.
Have a great day!
