How come no one here talks about Anne McCaffrey?  I hear/read lots about Lord of the Rings and Star Wars, but none about the Dragonriders of Pern.  That's probably her most famous series.  If not that one, then how about the Petabee or Acorna series?  Or the Crystal Singer trilogy?  Maybe the Talent books?

I mean, she's written over 40 books and I have 29 of them and have read about a dozen more.  Arguably her books could be more sci-fi than fantacy, but so is Star Wars.

Anyone who would like to discuss any of her works, please chat me up.

I've heard lots of discussions about her books with people I know, but I've never actually read any.

I just finished reading the Petaybee books.  It's kind of a double trillogy.  I read the first 3 a long time ago, but just read the laterest 2.  I know I said trillogy, but it's obviously going to have another book.  Powers that Be, Power Lines, and Power Play are about the parents.  Changlings and Maelstrom are about their twins.  The dad, Sean, and the twins, Roran and Murel, are selkies, shapeshifting seals.  Also thier home planet, Petaybee, is senat.  They are very interesting books but Maelstrom ends in a chiff-hanger.  So I'm waiting for the next one.

I read the whole Acorna series a few years back thought it was great. I especially like the "Uncles" who raised her. The whole heal others weaken yourself thing was new to me when I read these though I've found it in other things since then. It was interesting when she found her own kind that she didn't break off the old allegiances with her human companions. My very favorite part of the whole series was when she saved the children from the work houses. You know what you've made me want to read them all over again, thanks. D.

How's the Acorna series content-wise? I've heard the Pern books have some controversial content that may not be advisable for all audiences—but I know authors often write differently in different books.

They weren't too graphic violence or sexual wise. I remember them being a good, light read that didn't get too heavy. Really I thought it was just a fun series to read, I mean some of it was intense like the overworked poorly treated children but she didn't turn it into anything overly graphic. D.

How about the mood and morals of the main characters? I guess that's what I meant to ask.

Besides the first inclination of humanity to try and label the little alien girl as retarded rather than from another planet it has a very light cheery mood. I mean as in all stories it has some lower points but the main characters keep good morals through it all. They have principles that they stick too about right and wrong. It comes off at times as a young adult series, really.
Hope this is what you were looking for. D.
