The tiny trio makes their live action debut in this family comedy about the pint-sized pop stars. With the help of CGI, Alvin, Simon, and Theodore come to life, causing mischief for their human guardian, Dave Seville

FIFTY years ago a bloke called Ross Bagdasarian had the slightly barmy idea of forming a pop group comprised of cartoon chipmunks.

A stream of hit records and an animated telly show followed and now chipmunks Alvin, Simon and Theodore have been given an up-to-date makeover in this big-budget movie.

It traces the story of how the squeaky-voiced siblings came to be adopted by struggling songwriter Dave Seville, played by My Name Is Earl star Jason Lee.

Dave soon realises that the singing chipmunks are his ticket to chart success and before you can say Crazy Frog their novelty Christmas record has hit the No 1 spot.


But the cute critters begin to look decidedly less bright-eyed and bushy-tailed when the full force of their record company’s marketing machine swings into action and sidelines Dave.

Suddenly stockpiling enough nuts for winter looks like a walk in the park for the lads.

This is a fantastic family film with bags of energy and gags which will be appreciated by young and old.

The helium-voiced heroes are a delight to watch in every scene and kids will love them.

Adults will also appreciate the film’s satire on the cynicism of the music industry.

The seamless blending of the excellent CGI animation with real-life action is first-class. And despite its super-cute stars, the film avoids descending into saccharine sentimentality, partly thanks to Lee’s understated but likeable performance as Dave.

Kids will be nuts about this chipmunk movie.
