Advice on presenting SL to general public at live arts event Dear Educators,

I’m a director of Jazz Umbrella – a charity dedicated to music education, broadening Jazz audiences and programming live jazz events in the UK. We are about to launch our SL/RL project to trial streaming live gigs from a South London Jazz Club into a virtual visual art space and back again.  (For full info on this project see www.jazzliveinsecondlife.com)

The question we now face is how to present this to our RL audience who are already talking about SL in terms of the usual negative press (i.e., its either just for rich geeks, gaming freaks or paedophiles).

People who have either never heard of SL, or only heard the rumours, will be able to see the gig they are attending broadcast into a (very abstract) space in SL and will be able to see and interact with the SL audience.

On the nights of the event, the RL audience won’t get a full SL experience as they will only be looking at the sim created by the fantastic artists we have on board (DanCoyote Antonelli, Oberon Onmura and Juria Yoshikawa).

We have a press pack and a 2-sided A4 info sheet about the project, but I’d like to ensure that:
  1. The RL audience get an idea of the basic concept of SL
  2. Those creative and musical types get an inspiring introduction to the potential of virtual collaboration
  3. The negative rumours of what SL is about does not sour the event
  4. The artwork, music and project in general is recognised for its innovation and creative merit
  5. The project is taken seriously
I’ve been wondering whether we could add “clout” to the event by emphasising the ground-breaking educational activities taking place in SL and the vibrant music, arts and not-for-profit communities here.

Any ideas for a simple way to explain the concept and potential that you all see in Second Life?

Yours,
Mary D

(I’ve had an SL account for years now and been following various lists with great interest although not had time or opportunity to develop my own projects until now…)
