Hello,

I received a PDF document from my doctor's office and when I opened it,   was told it was an empty document and Jaws could not read it.

I remember we had a discussion about this at one point but cannot recall what was said.  Can someone tell me how I can read this document using Jaws?

I am using XP Home and Jaws 9.

You would need an OCR program to recognize the PDF document. Both OpenBook
and Kurzweil 1000 support PDF files, and you can even "print" to those
programs so that it recognizes and displays the recognized text
automatically.

Kathy, it sounds to me like what you've got there is a .PDF that's really a scanned image of a document.  This will require you to run OCR on it.  IF you can't do this yourself because you don't have an OCR program on your machine, send it to me and I'll try to decode it for you.

If you can, perform OCR on the file by running it through K1000,
Openbook, or similar program. It's probably a pdf of a scanned image.

Katherine,
Adobe Acrobat Reader will tell you that a PDF document is empty if there is only graphics in the document. If the graphic image has text in it, it is unreadable by JAWS because the text is just part of the image. The solution is to use an Optical Character Recognition (OCR) program, such as OpenBook, Abbey Fine Reader, ect. to convert the text in the image to screen-reader accessible text.

I'm pretty sure there's not. I can't look at the version on this computer
to tell you for absolute certainty due to the fact this one's a little
less than stable, but since a lot of PDF authors do it for security
reasons, I don't believe Adobe gives users of their PDF reader an OCR
option.

Good afternoon,

I have never discovered any OCR options in Adobe Reader, perhaps one
of their other products would have this feature.  From a marketing
perspective it just wouldn't make sence to give away an OCR application.

If you're in a bind you can try the trial of Abby FineReader, which is
one of the OCR applications included in Kurzweil 1000, and likely
OpenBook, and which works quite well with JAWS.  I beileve that there
is a limit to the number of pages that can be processed with the
FineReader trial.

HTH,
Everett

For Openbook to scan the PDF

1.  Open OpenBook
2.  Open the PDF
3.  From the files menus, select print
4. In the print dialog, choose Freedom Import printer and press okay.
5. Openbook should recognize and display the text in its own window.

Note:  If you have both OpenBook 7 and 8, you will need to find the
window asking you which one to use, and okay that before the
recognition phase can begin.

Basically you do the same thing with Kurzweil.  You would go to the
print dialog and select the kesi printer.  I don't know whether you
have to open k1000 first.  I think not, but try it and see.

Good luck!

Oh, thank you.  I just priced Open Book and there is no way that I can afford such a thing.  I wish they would not charge so much for important things like this, it makes some of us have to do without being able to read important documents.  I think it's sad, to say the least.  This is a health matter and is vital information.

Hi Katherine,

Well, you do *NOT* have to have OpenBook to be able to read printed materials.

Omni Book Pro or Abby Fine Reader will do a very competent job and create a Microsoft Word document which Window-Eyes, JAWS or Hal will read.

In fact, Abby Fine Reader is the engine (one of them) which OpenBook uses.

You are just paying a blamed high premium for some conveniences which (supposedly) OpenBook provides.

If you can not afford JAWS, Window-Eyes Hal or one of the high priced screen readers there is System Access (used to be called Freedom Book or something like that) can be rented by the month and it really will do a fairly competent job for you.

There are also some open source screen readers which are up and coming and, while not without fault, they are also without cost.

HTH,

Cy, The Anasazi…

Oh, thank you.  I just priced Open Book and there is no way that I can afford such a thing.  I wish they would not charge so much for important things like this, it makes some of us have to do without being able to read important documents.  I think it's sad, to say the least.  This is a health matter and is vital information.

Kathy, it sounds to me like what you've got there is a .PDF that's really a scanned image of a document.  This will require you to run OCR on it.  IF you can't do this yourself because you don't have an OCR program on your machine, send it to me and I'll try to decode it for you.

Sincerely,

Yes, in fact, it would.  I just used it to decipher and give Katherine back
her document in .txt form.

Wouldn't an off the shelf OCR application like Omnipage have this
capability as well?
