50 mile buffer question

   According to the article the routes at the post office I work at should be on hold because of these FSS sights. How do the come up with the 50 miles. Wheaton Illinois would be the closet city to my post office, and according to mapquest its roughly 68 miles away. Im assuming they should measure using roads, because im sure carriers wouldnt be flying their planes if they come to our office. I think this could be an important find, unfortunately I know we are in the 50 mile buffer zone for central Illinois. One is better than two in this case. Any thoughts?

on closer inspection, we are closest to lombard illinois. I got the address for their post office and did mapquest from there to my post office. 62.71 miles

The Buffer is set up like this:

On a map, pick an FSS site, use that as the center point and go out 50 miles and draw one big Circle.

they need to deliver these fss machines 50 miles to the east into the middle of lake michigan.

Re Buffer.  The buffer determination has changed.  Originally it was as stated, 50 miles from the plant that was going to house the FSS machine.  However, it has changed.  Now, they are holding routes that are within 50 miles of an office that has been notified that whey will get FSS flats.  SO i guess, technicaly speaking it could really be 100 miles.  50 from the plant to the office that gets FSS flats and 50 from that office to yours.  
Our office in south FLorida was originall excluded from the MOU we were about 10 miles too far north from Miami and about 65 miles too far south from Orlando, however that recently changed as they now plan to provide FSS flats to an office that is farther north.  
You got to see that the FSS machines were planned when the flat volume was highg a couple of years ago.  THose babys can move some flats. Now with volume in flats falling daily, THey can still run the same # of flats per hour, it will just cover more post offices than they originally planned.  THey are spending mucho $$$ on these monsters so you can bet they are going to use them as much as they can.
