I'm using AMD64 Ubuntu Gutsy's 1.3.3-1build1 version of audacity . Sorry if this
is fixed in 1.3.4.
I noticed this while using audacity to compare multiple copies of the same song.
1. I imported the files, downmixed each stereo track to mono,
2. I used the time shift tool to delay one of them so the samples lined up.
3. I turned the two tracks into one stereo track.
4. I clicked over at the left to select the whole track
5. I applied effect->signal difference (IAMA)
The result wasn't even close to zero, and I eventually figured out that it
worked right only if the selection didn't include the gap at the start of the
right channel. I guess audacity fed the plugin with data from the start of each
channel, ignoring the gap at the beginning of one of them.
I found this to be totally non-obvious and undesirable behaviour. i.e. it felt
like a bug, even if there are reasons why it makes sense. Audacity should
either generate silence when there's a gap in what it's giving the plugin, or
skip parts of the track where not all the channels are present. Hmm, I can
think of cases where that would not be desirable either.
Probably generating silence and replacing gappy input with the full output of
the plugin is the most general way to solve it. Although maybe not the most
useful in some situations...
If you don't change the current behaviour, maybe audacity to put up a warning
dialog box if the selection includes gaps. (With a "don't show this again"
tickbox, of course.)
